WHAT IS LASER EPILATION?
Laser epilation is an efficient method that is used in order to get rid of the unwanted hair on our bodies, approved in 1997 by FDA (Food and Drug Administration of the United States). The treatment is performed depending on that patient’s skin tonne (it is ordered between one to six depending on the genetically adopted pigment “melanin”) and hair colour. During this medical process laser system turns ultraviolet lights into heat and terminates hair reproduction by retrograding the hair bulbs.
Laser Types
Alexandrite Cynosure
Diode
Nd: Yag
All the three laser systems are present in our clinic to provide the most sufficient treatment to our patients.
Alexandrite Laser:
Wavelength 755 nm, applied to: one to four skin tonnes, ingrown problems, folliculitis (barber’s itch).
Making itself a name with its speed and power, Apogee with its 18 mm+ apparatus provides a power of 20 j/cm at 2 Hz. It demonstrates that Alexandrite’s 755 nm is the ideal wavelength regarding the unwanted body hair by providing a high melanin absorption. Also, this certain wavelength succeeds in pigment lesion treatment at 0.5 ms. The spot headers on the device provide patient-specific treatment options by having different spot sizes and display long lasting performance by stabilising its power.
Diode
Wavelength 810 nm, applied to the skin tonnes three to five.
It is commonly used to retrograde in a controlled manner the hair bulbs that are deeply rooted in the skin. Since it has a wider header its epilation sessions take shorter.
Nd: Yag Laser
Wavelength 1064 nm, applied to all the skin tonnes, is most affective for the tonnes five to six.
This is the only laser system that is recommended to use on darker skin tonnes.
WHAT TO DO AND KNOW DURING THE LASER EPILATION PROCESS
Pre-Epilation:
Tanning processes such as solarium or sunbathing should be avoided for at least a month before the epilation.
Processes that remove the hair from its root such as wax should be avoided for at least a month before the epilation.
Processes such as peeling should be avoided for at least twenty days before the epilation.
Any hair blonding application should be avoided before the epilation.
No cosmetics should be applied when coming the epilation to sessions.
Post-Epilation:
At least a 30-factor sun cream should be applied to the epilation area.
The epilation area’s exposure to the hot water should be avoided.
Any application that can irritate the skin, such as bath glove usage on the area and peeling should be avoided for a week.
After each session, the epilation areas should be applied moisturiser three times a day for five days.
Is Laser Epilation Safe?
Yes, it is safe. Laser light is absorbed by the melanin pigment that it aims thus does not proceed further through the skin and cannot hurt any internal organs. Since all the laser epilation systems that we use does not emit rays but emit lights there happens no emission of radiation.
How Often are the Sessions Applied?
Laser epilation is a treatment therefore the hair reproduction cycle should be concerned.
For the facial area each session should be applied every five or six weeks. For other parts of the body, it should be performed every eight to twelve weeks depending on the area.
Which Areas Can Laser Epilation be Applied to?
Since laser light solely aims the hair bulbs it does not have any adverse effect on the surrounding areas therefore it can be applied to any area on will.
How Many Sessions Should be Applied?
All the hair bulbs on our body are not active simultaneously. Since laser light affects solely the active hair bulbs, one session is not enough to remove all. Sessions take longer or shorter for each area. Each area requires different number of sessions.
What are the side effects?
Visible redness occurs during and after the application.
Swelling and burning sensation occur on the application area.
For sensitive skins these affects may last for two to three days.
Is laser epilation ever dangerous?
If you have tan on your skin and took solarium sessions your skin may be damaged. Brief your specialist if there is such case.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Laser Epilation be Applied During Pregnancy?
There are no findings of harm of the application of laser during pregnancy regarding baby’s or mother’s health. However, since pregnancy is a sensitive period the waist and breast areas should not be applied any laser or needle epilation especially in the last three months of pregnancy.
Can Laser Epilation be Applied to the Nursing Women?
Yes, there are no side effects.
Does Laser Epilation Cause Infertility?
There is no medical records stating laser epilation causes infertility for approximately twenty years now. Since the energy used during epilation solely aims specific areas it does not cause infertility.
Does laser epilation break the fast?
According to the statement by the Department of Religious Affairs by any means removal of hair would not break the fast.
Does laser epilation permanently remove the hair?
It is approved by the Food and Drug Administration of the United States as the “Permanent epilation”. Considering the best suited treatment is applied to the patient a success rate of 70 to 95% for women, 60 to 85% for men can be achieved.
